Treatment

Our Scoliosis Treatment

Treatment by Braced for Scoliosis is driven by evidence-based research, and has been developed to support patients every step of the way.

My child has been diagnosed with scoliosis, what next?

If your child has a scoliosis with a cobb angle of less than 45 degrees, they may have been prescribed a scoliosis brace. This has been proven to be effective in reducing curve progression through their remaining growth. However there is a considerable choice for brace designs available these days and more advanced designs can, in the right circumstance even reduce the curvature.

Modern brace styles such as Gensingen Brace are based on the principles of the original Cheneau brace designed in 1979 by Jacques Cheneau. A ‘Cheneau’ brace is designed according to a curve classification and applies specific corrective forces to the spine to correct deformity. This type of brace also has ‘voids’ or ‘windows’ for the trunk concavities to shift and expand into allowing for a more corrected shape of the ribs and vertebra during growth.

The Cheneau-Gensingen or GBW brace has been developed further to improve comfort and correction by implementing specific corrective movements derived from the original Schroth method. This has resulted in a brace that provides significant correction but with less pressure and less compressive forces.

These differ hugely from the typical ‘Boston’ style of bracing that is widely available in the UK which are compressive, bulky, uncomfortable and non-corrective.

Whilst there are more ‘asymmetric’ or ‘corrective’ designs available now, the The Gensingen Brace is has undergone continuous development and is now the
most widely used Cheneau derivative internationally for the treatment of scoliosis.

The Only UK Provider for the Gensingen Brace

We are the only UK provider for the Gensingen brace.

If you would like to explore this type of brace as an option for your child, you will need to have an image or copy of a recent x-ray of your child. We work with many consultants across the UK who support the parents desire to step away from the NHS standard brace who are looking for a better outcome and desire to avoid surgery.

It is however advisable that you are under the care of a consultant alongside this treatment, and we are able to collaborate with them.

If you would like to organise an initial assessment or would like to discuss this process further, please contact me.

Understanding

Braced for Scoliosis Treatments

The Process

We champion the Cheneau-Gensingen (or GBW) brace for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. This brace applies specific corrective forces to the spine to correct deformity: read about our process.

Fitting the Brace

After a fitting, the tailored scoliosis brace then takes 7 – 10 days to manufacture. We will work with you to ensure optimum comfort and function for your child via adjustments and follow-ups.

Brace Management

Ongoing back brace treatment for childhood scoliosis includes a series of follow-ups, which are essential for the management of your child’s wellbeing. Read more about this important step.

Results of Scoliosis Treatment

This is an example of spinal curve reduction using a Gensingen Brace.

Results are from full time bracing after 10 weeks in a patient with AIS Risser 0.

Can a brace be worn part-time?

Part time braces were indicated where full time Boston bracing was less tolerated to prevent progression. There is no evidence that suggests a part time brace will reduce the Cobb angle. Therefore, in peak growth a brace should initially be worn full time to maximise potential for curve reduction.

Once the growth potential reduces then part time wear is appropriate and we manage this carefully to achieve the best outcome and ensure a positive experience for the child or adolescent. This is of course case dependant, and you should discuss your individual case with Sally to determine the best course of action.

Wearing a scoliosis brace can be a challenging journey for a child or adolescent. You and your child will need continued support throughout this process and to ensure progress is made but also that you feel confident and motivated along the way. We understand how tough it can be and have a lot of experience in managing these challenges. We encourage you to keep communicating with us and be open and honest about your journey.

We can also connect you with other brace users for peer support.
