Ongoing Scoliosis Brace Management
After the fitting, your child will follow a programme which will involve days on and off of wearing the brace, which helps them to get used to wearing the brace, increases comfort, and increases compliance.
The brace treatment includes a series of appointments, which are essential to the management of your child’s scoliosis treatment.
What happens after the fitting?
After the initial fitting, you will need to organise an in-brace x-ray or EOS scan at approximately 6 weeks after the fitting, this is to review the correction of the brace and fine tune it accordingly. The brace will need adjusting with growth, to ensure the correction is optimum.
Each brace will last between 9-12 months, dependent on age and expected growth. Review appointments are recommended every 3 months, and you should continue your prescribed Schroth physiotherapy programme alongside wearing the brace.
Once a brace becomes too small and the correction of the brace is affected, it may impact the effectiveness of the treatment and therefore a new brace would be recommended. An out of brace x-ray or EOS scan will be required at this stage. We try to co-ordinate these scans with routine scans via your consultant to limit additional radiation exposure.
Scoliosis Treatment: Amazing Results
This is an example of curve reduction in an early onset scoliosis case.
This case was treated with a Gensingen brace full time initially, then reduced to part time after 1 year.
The patient wore a brace for 4 years in total and has now been discharged from brace treatment completely.
Wearing a Scoliosis Brace
It is recommended to wear the brace over a vest. Thin short sleeved cotton vests are ideal. Primark and H&M have good options. These can also be purchased from specialist websites such as Sensory Smart which has a great range.
